Commission on HopSkip: FAQs for Planners and Hoteliers

Everything you need to know about how commission works on HopSkip — for planners requesting commission, hoteliers responding to it, and anyone wondering if HopSkip charges one.

Written by Katelyn Neary

💰 Does HopSkip charge commission?

No. HopSkip does not charge commission. HopSkip is a subscription-based platform — planners pay a subscription fee to use the platform, and hotels can access it at no charge. There are no commissions collected by HopSkip on bookings made through the platform.

Commission on HopSkip refers exclusively to the commission that a travel agent or agency planner may request from a hotel — this is a negotiation between the planner and the hotel, not a fee charged by HopSkip.

🗓️ For Planners: Requesting Commission

How does commission show up on my RFPs?

If you are a travel agent or agency planner who earns commission on hotel bookings, HopSkip uses your IATA number to flag your RFPs as commission-eligible. When your IATA number is on file in your account, your RFPs will display an "Agent of Record" field visible to hotels — indicating that commission is requested.

If a hotel sees "Agent of Record: No Commission" on your RFP, it means your IATA number has not yet been added to your account.

How do I get my IATA number added?

At this time, IATA numbers need to be added to your account by the HopSkip support team. To get yours added:

  1. Have your IATA number ready (e.g., 12345678)

  2. Reach out via chat support, available 8am–8pm EST, Monday–Friday

  3. Share your IATA number and your HopSkip account email

Once added, your existing and future RFPs will be updated to reflect your commission status. Hotels will see the commission indicator when reviewing your RFP.

💡 Tip: If you send RFPs frequently as a travel agent, getting your IATA number added is a one-time setup. All subsequent RFPs will automatically reflect your commission status going forward.

Do I specify the commission rate on my RFP?

The commission percentage is not set by the planner on the RFP itself. Instead, it is offered by the hotel in their proposal response. Hotels may propose a commission rate as part of their offer, and planners can review and negotiate from there.

🏨 For Hoteliers: Responding to Commission Requests

How do I know if a planner is requesting commission?

When you open an RFP, look for the "Agent of Record" field in the RFP details. If a commission is requested, you will see the planner's agency name and IATA number listed there. If it reads "No Commission," the planner has not indicated they are collecting commission on this booking.

Where do I enter commission in my proposal?

There is a dedicated Commission Rate % field in the proposal builder. Here's where to find it:

  1. Navigate to the Taxes & Fees section of your proposal builder

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen

  3. Locate the "Commission Rate %" field under the Group section

  4. Enter the commission percentage you are offering (e.g., 10)

⚠️ Important: Do not add commission as a custom tax or fee line item. The commission field is separate from taxes and fees, and adding a percentage under the custom fees section will cause it to be added on top of your base rate — inflating the rate the planner sees. Always use the dedicated Commission Rate % field.

What does the Commission Rate % field actually do?

The Commission Rate % you enter applies to the guest room rate only — it does not apply to F&B, meeting room rental, or other fees. This is consistent with standard industry practice, where commission is typically paid on the room revenue.

If your room rate is already commissionable (i.e., the commission cost is baked into the rate you're offering), you still need to enter the commission percentage in this field so the planner can see what commission they will receive. The commission amount shown to the planner is informational and reflects what they will earn — it is not added on top of your offered rate.

My commission is already included in the room rate I'm offering. Do I still fill out the field?

Yes. Even if your rate is commissionable and the commission is built in, you should enter the commission % in the dedicated field. This communicates the commission clearly to the planner and ensures the proposal reflects your offer accurately. If you leave it blank, the planner may not know commission is included.

🤝 For Affiliates & NSOs: Commission and Your Role

Affiliates (e.g., ALHI, Teneo, Preferred) earn commission on bookings for the hotels in their portfolio. HopSkip surfaces your involvement on an RFP when a planner adds you by name — but the commission arrangement itself is handled outside the platform, directly between you and the hotel.

If you have questions about whether a specific RFP carries commission, we recommend reaching out to the planner directly via the HopSkip messaging feature (if enabled).

⚠️ Important: Hotels can sometimes be part of more than one sales affiliate portfolio. It is up to the organization to keep their portfolio updated. If a hotel has two or more sales affiliations in their profile, both will get the RFP notification if the planner includes them by name!

❓ Other Common Questions

Can I see the commission rate on an RFP before submitting my proposal?

The RFP will show whether commission is requested (via the Agent of Record field) but does not always specify the percentage the planner expects. If no rate is specified, use your standard commission rate or reach out to the planner to confirm their expectation before submitting.

The RFP says "No Commission" but the planner told me they collect commission. What do I do?

This likely means the planner's IATA number hasn't been added to their HopSkip account yet or they did not include it in the request. Direct them to our support team — we can get their IATA number added and update the RFP to reflect their commission status.

Does HopSkip charge monthly fees, or commission?

HopSkip charges planners a monthly or annual subscription fee — not commission. Hotels use HopSkip at no charge. Neither planners nor hotels pay a commission to HopSkip on any booking.
